History:
Subaru was faced with a dilemma when it decided to eliminate the 2-door coupe from the lineup because JGTC (Japan Grand Touring Championship) rules that only 2-doors could participate in the series.

So how did a Subaru sedan make it into the mix? Racing car tuner Carroser and Subaru asked for and received approval from JAF (Japan Automobile Federation) to allow the 4-door model to contest in the GT300 class. And although it may be a 4-door the Cusco Subaru Advan is a true race car.

Modifications by Carroser included enhancements to the chassis, body, suspension, and aerodynamic properties of the Impreza, primarily using Cusco brand high performance components, while Subaru's famed motorsports and tuning division, STI (Subaru Technica International), tweaked the engine for maximum acceleration out of corners and improved durability.

For the 2003 season, regulation changes allowed the gearbox location to be unrestricted, therefore, the Impreza adapted a transaxle layout, with the transmission and rear differential now configured into one unit. This improved the car's weight balance, and, since already having excellent cornering ability with a low center of gravity thanks to its boxer engine, gains were made in drivability and engine performance.

With veteran touring car drivers Katsuo Kobayashi and Tatsuya Tanigawa at the wheel, the Subaru Impreza scored impressive points finishes in several races over the course of the JGTC season that year.
